There is currently a law that states that abortion will automatically become a criminal act in Illinois if Roe v. Wade is overturned. House Bill 40 removes this law from Illinois Criminal Code. In addition, it repeals the harmful discriminatory Illinois law that prevents low-income women from obtaining abortion care solely due to the source of their health insurance. HB 40 also repeals the Illinois law that denies insurance coverage for abortion care to state employees, while male employees have coverage for Viagra.
HB40 has passed the Illinois House and Senate, but Governor Rauner has threatened to veto it. Join the Pritzer campaign to mobilize the resistance around HB40.
There will be a HB40 Postcard party on Sept. 9th from 10:30am-12pm at Gaslight Restaurant (2450 N Clark). RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Postcards to sign and send to the Governor will also be available at the MF fundraiser and the next MF meeting.
Hurricane Harvey has caused catastrophic flooding throughout Texas. Officials report the best way to help those affected is to donate money to agencies with experience in disaster relief.
"Right now the best thing people can do is donate money," said Katrina Farmer, director of American Red Cross offices in San Angelo, Abilene and Wichita Falls, Texas cities far from the coastline. "This is going to be an expensive disaster."
