The vote for the American Health Care Act (AHCA) is likely to be in the next few days to weeks. This is especially concerning because the bill is being put together in secret and word is that they will try to get a vote on the bill without any public hearings or debate. The ACA took over a year to pass and in the House, had 79 hearing and 121 amendments.
If the house bill is any indication, millions of Americans would lose coverage under the AHCA. In addition, essential benefit requirements that cover birth control and maternity care would likely be stripped as mandatory coverage and Planned Parenthood would be defunded. The GOP also wants to convert Medicaid funding to state block grants that would cap the federal contribution. Due to this, state budgets won't be able to keep up with the cost of medical innovations and states would likely have to further cut Medicaid coverage.
Call Governor Rauner at 312-814-2121 and ask that he publicly oppose the AHCA.
Of interest, last week a group of bipartisan governors released a letter stating their opposition. http://www.businessinsider.com/gop-healthcare-bill-ahca-kasich-charlie-baker-2017-6
June 20th is World Refugee Day, a day to commemorate the strength, courage, and resilience of refugees across the globe. In honor of this day, RefugeeOne has organized a call to elected leaders to welcome and support refugees. RefugeeOne is asking everyone to make 3 calls- one to each of your Senators and to your Congressperson. Call 1-844-4STAND5 to be connected to your representatives.
Here's a sample script:
Hi, my name is __ and I'm a constituent from [city, zip code]. I'm calling ahead of World Refugee Day on 6/20 to let my representative know I support refugees in Illinois. I hope you, too, will support, defend, and protect refugees, as well.
Also consider signing this petition to urge Governor Rauner to sign the TRUST ACT. The Trust Act measure places reasonable, constitutional limits on state and local police interaction with federal immigration officials, furthering trust between local police and immigrant communities all across Illinois. https://ssl.capwiz.com/aclu/il/issues/alert/?alertid=77775626&type=SW
